Swaziland: TB affected communities taking action
SAfAIDS in collaboration with the miners association conducted 2 meetings with TB affected communities in 2 Constituencies (Nkwene and Mpolonjeni) on 19-20th November 2014. During these meetings the communities were given refresher training on TB (with more emphasis on TB symptoms, community coordinated support in identifying TB patients for TB treatment and adherence). The newly developed National Strategic Plan (NSP 2015-2019) on TB was introduced to the communities through a presentation by the National TB Programme (NTP). Communities made a plea for the extension of support and commitment in embracing the implementation of the strategy especially during the intense case finding exercise whereby NTP will conduct door-to-door home visits in an attempt to vigorously identify TB infected persons.
Feedback was also given to the communities on progress that has been made by the 2 TB representatives (SAfAIDS country rep. and SWAMMIWA’s programme personnel) that were appointed to represent TB affected communities in the CCM. Communities were given feedback on the joint TB and HIV concept note development to GF and appreciation was uttered on the milestone made in representing TB for the first time in the CCM.
During these meetings a majority of the participants were ex-miners and their families because of the high prevalence of TB in the mining sector.
