Botswana UNGASS Country Report 2008

The HIV/ AIDS epidemic continues to exert untold misery on Batswana’s well being despite our multi-sectoral, multi-level response efforts. For over twenty years we have witnessed persistent erosion of national development efforts on many fronts, leaving behind heightened dependency rates, increased demand for both institutional and home-based care for the sick, and emotionally depressed citizens as families lose parents, guardians, breadwinners and children. This does not augur well for national social welfare, and it is against this background that Botswana renews its commitment to the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS. We recognize the need to reverse the epidemic in all its spheres of impact - there is no room for complacency.
