Gender based violence can sometimes lead to forced sex, which may directly increase the risk of HIV transmission as a result of physical trauma. Inadequacies in law enforcement and justice delivery systems may result in women feeling that there is no benefit in reporting sexual abuse or rape. Further, the lack of enabling environments and structures to help and support women who have experienced sexual violence may also act as a disincentive for women to seek post-exposure prophylaxis to protect themselves from contracting HIV.
