Zimbabwe: 'Move Away From HIV/ AIDS Stigmatisation'

Harare, 31 July 2009 (Herald)  — Members of the community have been urged to move away from stigmatising and secluding people living with HIV and Aids, but instead embrace them in all development initiatives.

Africa: HIV Laws Do More Harm Than Good

Cape Town — In Sierra Leone, a mother who transmits HIV to her child can be fined, jailed for up to seven years, or both. Human Rights Watch reports that in 2008, several men were arrested in Egypt simply for being HIV positive. New legislation is currently being discussed in Angola that could lead to a three to ten year jail sentence for those who knowingly pass on HIV.

Ongoing HIV replication when a person is receiving antiretroviral treatment increases the risk of AIDS-related lymphomas developing, German investigators report in the July 1st edition of the Journal of Infectious Diseses. The researchers found that the longer a patient had a detectable viral load, the greater the risk of lymphoma.
